We fight hunger by sourcing food for people in need

Key problem:

The primary focus of food waste prevention should be to act directly at source by limiting the generation of surplus food at each stage in the food supply chain (i.e. production, processing, distribution and consumption).

If this cannot be achieved, the best destination for food surplus, which ensures the highest value use of edible food resources, is to redistribute this food for human consumption where safe to do so.

Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources.

By reducing food losses and waste we can also:

  • support the fight against climate change (food waste alone generates about 8% of Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions)
  • save nutritious food for redistribution to those in need, helping to eradicate hunger and malnutrition (some 43 million people in the EU cannot afford a quality meal every second day)
  • save money for farmers, companies and households.

51% of population in Sarajevo is socially endangered in spite of this, it is estimated that nearly 3000 tons of food in Sarajevo is wasted or lost every year.

Food wastage in Sarajevo happens at multiple levels – harvesting, transporting, processing, packaging and consuming. Weddings, events, restaurants, hostels and houses are a major source for food wastage of cooked food.

All actors in the food chain have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste, from those who produce and process foods (farmers, food manufacturers and processors) to those who make foods available for consumption (hospitality sector, retailers) and ultimately consumers themselves.

If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world, after China and the U.S.

By preventing food from being thrown into garbage dumps near our residential areas and ever growing landfills we work towards a cleaner Sarajevo.

Food thrown in landfills produces the deadly methane gas on getting decomposed, which adversely affects the ozone layer of our environment. Our efforts also prevent further carbon emissions!

Hunger is not an issue of scarcity, it’s a matter of logistics.


Solution hypothesis:

If we develop open source solution that is location agnostic and completely automated we can help solve hunger and food wastage issue in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

If we monitor food waste levels and report back regarding progress made we could prove that solution is indeed working.

If a donator is offered web/mobile application that would make it easy to sign up and donate food then he/she would be more inclined to donate.

If a volunteer is offered web/mobile application that would make it easy to help collect and distribute food then he/she would be more inclined to help.

If a volunteer is offered web/mobile application that would track his pickup and delivery stats he would be motivated to keep volunteering.

If a beneficiary is offered web/mobile application that would make it easy to sign up so that he can receive food then he/she would be more likely to participate.

Lessons learned:

Internal brainstorming and lean market validation showed us Sarajevo is ready and in need of this kind of service.

Many old age citizens are still technologically unaware so getting them to sign up and use the app has proven difficult, this can be mitigated with admin role who is authorized to add beneficiaries.

Volunteers are key to ensuring implementation in an efficient and sustainable manner. They are expected to travel on their own to facilitate the collection and delivery of the food.

Some caterers were apprehensive that they might be liable if people fell sick after eating the food so to ensure that the food is fit for consumption, volunteers check the food before actually distributing it.

We should discourage random distribution of food because we believe that it encourages begging.

We are dependent on donations to take care of our operational expenditure.


Sustainability and indicative resources:

Sustainability for this kind of service shouldn't be expensive, recurring costs are domain name and servers. Since project is open sourced and MIT licensed all the development efforts should be on volunteer basis.

Initial research showed many of the Sarajevo's top IT companies are willing to support this kind of service via development/infrastructure/financial assistance.

We would use lean startup methodology where we build minimum viable product first, after which we would gather insights. This approach aims to shorten product development cycles and rapidly discover if a proposed business model is viable.

MVP for this kind of product can be done in under 2 months.
